our face-prayers:
The 133 "our face" portraits I have created in Asia include diverse groups of people. I have named this particular exhibition prayers. For the Muslims, the daily ritual of praying to the Mecca is an embodiment of their daily lives and their life as a whole. Prayer also reaches beyond the realm of religion. The portrait of the people of Hiroshima is a prayer for the consolation of the victims’ souls and the complete annihilation of atomic bombs. The Tiananmen Square, another subject of my work, is a historic site where the demand for democracy was met with bloodshed. My newest work consists of a portrait entitled 25 participants at 2014 Hong Kong protests “Umbrella Revolution” shot in October 2014. These demonstrations that took place in central Hong Kong, continued to employ non-violent tactics giving the movement almost an air of solemnness. This gesture can also be comprehended as a silent prayer for democracy. In our present day, there seems to be no end to conflict and disaster. And in these times, various people in various sites, from various backgrounds are praying in various ways. These works are the portraits of our prayers of today. (2015Jan. Ken Kitano)
